SUMMER CAMP 2017 AT Sundial
We will continue to offer a second summer camp location at the beachfront Sundial Resort on Sanibel in 2017. With Sundial as our partner, we will hold 3 weeks of Island Skills Camp for kids and Counselors in Training. This means more ocean exploration and more fun!
This camp will be small and meaningful, with big ocean experiences. The beachfront location means even more time in the water. And of course, no Sanibel Sea School camp would be complete without island exploration, surfing, macramé, and new friendships.
Sundial's Sanibel Sea School camp includes lunch for campers each day. At the end of each week families are invited to celebrate at our milk & cookies slideshow, held at 3:30 PM on Fridays.
SANIBEL SKILLS CAMP AT Sundial (AGES 6-13)
$335/ week, includes daily lunch surcharge
May 29-June 2, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Mangrove Mud Week
There are 4 types of mangroves on Sanibel and we’re going to learn all about them. Which means we are going to muck out! We’ll go on mangrove mud walks and collect their propagules (you’ll find out what that is!) We’ll see how mangroves are the secret safe spot for so many fish and creatures by snorkeling in and looking between their prop roots. We’ll have a mangrove scavenger hunt and make a map of the different mangroves on Sanibel. Mangroves feel like pirate-y, hidden, swampy places, so you’re gonna love exploring their secrets.
June 5-9, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Watch Me Swim, Crab Week
Swimming crabs are kind of funny. They look like they’re doing something they haven’t done very often. But actually they have their own little special appendages for this called swimmerets. We’re going to paddle our own swimmerets when we learn about the crazy swimming style of these crabs. We’re also going to have a molting race where we have to change our shell because that’s the way crabs grow! We’ll see if we can catch some crabs in crab traps this week and look for crab larvae in a plankton tow. Come along and be crabby with us!
July 31-August 4, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
The Loggerhead Sea Turtle is a big animal with crushing jaws and a sweet face. We’re going to learn about this endangered species that comes out of the ocean to dig nests on Sanibel. We’ll learn about where it nests on the island. We’ll study the crushing force of its jaws by seeing how much force it takes to crush different things. We’ll learn how to protect this beautiful creature from threats by making a lifecycle obstacle course and see how our “turtle” makes it through. Come be a big headed turtle with us.
CAMPS FOR TEENS At Sundial
Counselor in Training (CIT) Program (ages 13-18)
Offered most weeks, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM (CITs arrive at 7:30 AM on Monday)
$200/ week, lunch not included for CITs
Our CIT program is a leadership program for older campers to learn and practice the skills needed for their future employment. CITs are a vital link between our younger campers and the staff in our programs. Through theory and practice, we teach our CITs how to be leaders and positive role models to those around them. We assign duties and create and maintain performance expectations for these young leaders. We treat them with gentleness, love and respect, but show them how to carry out the responsibilities they are now capable of and how to use their abilities to become excellent role models. On any given day, it is hard to tell who is having more fun, the campers or the CITs.
